Naturalization of members of Mercantile Marine

Service in a ship that serves a British Transport has not generally been regarded as service under the Crown for purposes of British Nationality and Status of Aliens Act, 1914, but doubts are felt in doubtful cases. Local practice generally followed by local naturalization authorities is to consider such service as qualifying for naturalization.

It is felt that the amount of the applicant's residence ashore in British Territory is not sufficient to justify granting naturalisation at present; the question of the previous service of the applicant for naturalisation has previously arisen in the case of Mr. Jack, and I sent him a copy of our views for guidance on 35415/20.
